The current level of precision in observation of the vibratory problems of the vocal folds implies the need for reevaluation of concepts and adaptation to a new reality: Structural alterations of the vocal folds are not limited to a small group of lesions such as “nodules, polyps or cysts”.
Possibilities of structural alterations are immense, and it is clear that there are no two identical cases so it is necessary to come as close as possible to the specific diagnosis of the pathology of every patient before suggesting surgical treatment.
In the same manner, surgical treatment of voice disorders demands skilled, well trained and versatile surgeons who have access to state of the art technology and to a working team (anesthesiologists, surgical nurses, operating room personnel, voice therapists) with specific training in the topic.
Current demands of voice professionals are too high, and the surgeon, whenever is needed, must have the capacity of offering every patient the best possible results.
